Group dynamics present special challenges for an investment adviser working in the institutional space. Fiduciaries who serve on Investment Committees are always in a delicate situation when it comes to making investment decisions. We will discuss how, as advisers and co-fiduciaries, we can gain competitive advantage through our ability to listen, watch, and facilitate the decision-making process and add fulfilling, long-lasting, and lucrative institutional relationships to our business.

5:00 PM - 6:15 PM Breakout Sessions
Working with Institutions: Not for the Faint of Heart, or the Quick-Fix Artists
A continuation of Myrna Rivera?s session on Working with Committees. Typically, Committees do not own the assets they steward, so their motivations for involvement are different, and there are often hidden agendas. Their awareness of fiduciary issues can dramatically alter their perception of risk, and the interaction between Committee members will affect the nature and duration of the decision-making process. Working with institutions is both art and science, math and psychology. Are you well-rounded enough to engage this market?
  Myrna Rivera
    Practice Development Panel
There are many ways to build a successful practice. While hard work is a necessity, there are varied paths to success. Justin Harris decided to focus on SRI and used First Affirmative for asset management for almost all client accounts. Georgette Frazer was looking for a way to retire, and made the decision to go fee-only and to work on an adviser training service as well. Learn from your peers as they share their successes and challenges.

  * FAFN: Issues Facing Women As They Plan for Retirement
This panel will focus on two aspects of women and retirement. One of the key aspects of preparing women to finance their retirement is overcoming barriers to the advancement of women in the workplace. Simply put, higher paid women can afford to save more for retirement. A recent study shows that the wage gap between men and women narrows at companies where women have senior management positions. This panel will examine how the SRI research and advocacy process can help to advance women in the workplace. By advocating for more diverse participants in the corporate boardroom, for example, SRI promotes senior management opportunities for women, and this, in turn, helps female line managers. This panel will also focus on helping women address the financial issues that arise when planning for retirement as well as addressing the needs to educate children on the importance of investing. The book, Money Smart Women, shows that women can address such issues by "saving early and often."

FAFN: Social Screening: A Holdiings-Based Analysis of SRI Mutual Fund Practices
Mutual funds that characterize themselves as ?socially responsible? often identify a list of criteria that factor into their screening process: environmental, military, etc. How do the resulting portfolios compare to each other, and to an unscreened portfolio? Are some SRI funds more screened in a particular social or environmental concern than others? Is there an objective measure by which portfolios can be compared, and if so, can position weights also be taken into account? This presentation will look at the results of just such an objective analysis, in which the portfolios of twelve socially responsible mutual funds and the Vanguard 500 Index Fund have been examined according to both a comprehensive set of screens and six single-issue screens: environmental, military, diversity, human rights, sexual orientation, and labor. IW Financial was used for research and scoring.
